New patients

Welcome! Let’s make your first visit an easy one.

A new dentist comes with questions. Here’s what to expect, what to bring, and how insurance and payment work, so you can arrive feeling prepared.

What to expect

Three easy steps.

  1. Book a time. Online in a couple of minutes, or call and we’ll find a slot that fits. See our office hours to plan your visit.
  2. Come as you are. Arrive a few minutes early for paperwork. Bring your insurance card and a list of any medications you take.
  3. Meet the team. We’ll talk about what brings you in, take a look, and explain your options clearly before anything else happens. Nothing is decided without you.

For over 25 years, Healthy Smile has provided dental care in the Greater Grand Rapids area. Dr. Ona envisioned an office where all patients, especially women and children, would feel at home. That’s still the goal at every visit.

What to bring

A short checklist.

  • Your dental insurance card, if you plan to use insurance
  • A list of medications you take and any medical conditions we should know about
  • Names of previous dentists, so we can request records or X-rays if needed
  • Your questions and concerns. Nothing is too small to ask about

Comfort & accommodations

Comfortable and modern.

Dr. Ona believes you make the best decisions about your dental health when you’re well informed. Treatment options are presented clearly and without pressure, and the team takes pride in gentle chair-side manners and careful attention to what you need.

  • Comfort optionsHot pillows and movies during treatment, with laughing gas available when appropriate.
  • SedationOptions for patients with dental anxiety or more complex care needs.
  • Translation servicesAvailable on request. Let us know when you book.
  • Take a tour firstYou’re welcome to visit the office before scheduling your first appointment.

Insurance & payment

Most plans welcome.

Healthy Smile is a participating provider with Delta Dental Premier, Blue Cross Blue Shield, MetLife and Aetna. We also accept almost all other insurance plans.

How insurance works here

We’re happy to submit the forms needed so you receive the full benefits of your coverage. Because your policy is an agreement between you and your insurer, we can’t guarantee an estimated amount, and patients are responsible for their estimated portion on the day of treatment. If your insurer pays less than estimated, the remaining balance is your responsibility. Call with your plan details and we’ll check your benefits before your visit.

Payment plans

For patients who prefer monthly payments, we offer CareCredit, subject to credit approval and the terms of the plan. You can apply at our office, online, or by phone at (800) 677-0718. Ask our team about available plans and review the current CareCredit terms before applying.

Common questions.

It’s been years since my last visit. Where do I start?

Right here, and without judgment. Book online or call, tell us it has been a while, and we’ll plan a relaxed first visit to see where things stand and talk through your options.

Will I get a cleaning at my first appointment?

It depends on what you need. When you book your appointment, tell us whether you’d like a cleaning, an exam for a specific concern, or both, and we’ll set aside the right amount of time.

Do I need to fill out forms ahead of time?

Once you book an appointment with our office, our patient communication platform Nexhealth will send electronic forms via text message. If you prefer to fill out forms in office, plan to arrive 10 minutes early to complete the necessary paperwork. Please don’t send health information by ordinary email.

Can you help if I’m anxious or need accommodations?

Yes. Tell us what would help when you book. We offer comfort options from hot pillows to laughing gas and sedation, translation services on request, and help with the entrance and parking.

How do I change or cancel an appointment?

Please call the office at (616) 281-8338 and the team will help you find a new time.
